Duncan Was Assigned To Protect Notorious B.I.G. The Night Of His Death

Former bodyguard Michael Clarke Duncan has revealed he was assigned to protect Notorious B.I.G. on the night the tragic rapper was killed.

The Green Mile actor, who was a security-man-for-hire before his acting career took off, has confessed he was assigned to guard the heavyweight star at the Soul Train Music Awards in Los Angeles in March, 1997, but he swapped the job with a pal to cover R&B singer Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds instead.

Notorious B.I.G., real name Christopher Wallace, was gunned down in a drive-by shooting hours later.

And Duncan admits the incident was a rude awakening – one which prompted him to make a career change.

He explains, “One of my last assignments, it was really bad, because we were doing the Soul Train Music Awards and I was assigned to Biggie Smalls that night. The night that he got killed. A guy called me at the last second and said, ‘Did you want to switch?’ So I switched and went to Babyface and my friend went to Biggie Smalls – and that was the last time I worked security.”

And the actor can’t help but think that the rapper would have survived the attack on his life if he had been in charge of his security for the night.

He says, “In hindsight, everybody says I would have done this (differently) but my thing was never let the client sit on the passenger side door in the front. If you were my client, I’d have you… sitting in the middle (seat).

“When things like that happen you have to ask yourself, ‘Am I really ready to give up my life to do this?’ And I figured if you’re not ready to do that, you need to find some other type of work.”

Notorious B.I.G.’s murder remains unsolved.

Buffetts NetJets Widens Lufthansa Ties for Private

(Updates with sample pricing in seventh paragraph.)

Jan. 23 (Bloomberg) — NetJets Inc., the private-aircraft company owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc., deepened a partnership with Deutsche Lufthansa AG to offer private jet service to 3,000 North American airports.

The accord expands an agreement now in place to serve 1,000 destinations in Europe. The target market is wealthy travelers flying from Europe, and passengers can book just one trip, a smaller commitment than typically required for most charter-jet flights, said Martin Riecken, a Lufthansa spokesman.

“The beauty for the customer is he can book a trans- Atlantic flight from Europe to the U.S.” on a Lufthansa jet and then schedule a domestic flight leg, Riecken said today in a telephone interview.

Customers will have a dedicated service team to book flights, ground transportation and in-flight food and drink, Cologne, Germany-based Lufthansa said in a statement. Passengers can also get personal transfer service when connecting from overseas flights on Lufthansa planes to a private jet flight, plus access to airport lounges in 21 North American cities.

The Lufthansa-NetJets North American partnership will compete with services such as Delta Air Lines Inc.’s Delta Private Jets, which offers blocks of flight time as short as 10 hours that can be used on multiple trips.

The cost of a NetJets flight varies by length of flight and size of aircraft, Riecken said.

Super Bowl Flight

For example, chartering a four-person plane to Indianapolis, site of the National Football League’s Super Bowl on Feb. 5, from New Jersey’s Teterboro airport near New York would be $10 Watches Replica,800, Riecken said. The same trip on an eight- passenger jet would be $13,488, he said.

Delta’s hourly pricing can range from $4,750 to $11 Fake Watches,900, according to its website.

Lufthansa Private Jet passengers will earn 10,000 frequent- flier miles per flight leg, while NetJets will operate the flights with planes such as a seven-passenger Hawker 400XP or a 14-person Gulfstream G550, Lufthansa said in the statement.

“We are pleased to collaborate with Lufthansa on the expanded Lufthansa Private Jet product and provide travelers access to the convenience and flexibility of flying privately with NetJets,” Adam Johnson, president of sales, marketing and service for NetJets North America, said in an e-mailed statement.

NetJets Turnaround

NetJets, which Berkshire purchased in 1998, became “the major problem” for the Omaha, Nebraska-based parent in 2009 as the recession made it more difficult for the unit to fill planes, Buffett said in that year’s annual report.

Buffett replaced NetJets founder Richard Santulli with David Sokol, and the unit returned to profit after firing pilots and writing down the value of aircraft.

Buffett promoted Jordan Hansell to chief executive officer of NetJets in 2011, giving the unit its third leader in less than two years. Sokol, a former Berkshire energy executive, resigned last year.

Last March, NetJets agreed to buy as many as 120 planes from Bombardier Inc., including 50 firm orders with a retail price of $2.8 billion and deliveries beginning in 2017. NetJets has access to 750 jets worldwide.

(Updates with revision to 2010 growth in second paragraph.)

Jan. 18 (Bloomberg) — BP Plc cut its estimate of global energy demand growth through 2030 to 1.6 percent annually from 1.7 percent a year ago, according to statements on its website.

By Jack Jordan and Aliaksandr Kudrytski

Jan. 25 (Bloomberg) — Trade Capital Bank, the Belarusian bank controlled by Iran’s third-largest lender, said it will not stop operating after the U.S. designated it as providing financial services to the Export Development Bank of Iran amid sanctions against the Persian Gulf nation.

“This attitude angers us, because we’re a Belarusian bank, operating fully within the jurisdiction of the Republic of Belarus to the standards required by our laws Replica Watches,” Andrei Veretelnikov, chairman of Trade Capital Bank’s board, said by phone from Minsk yesterday. “There will be difficulties with our relations with European and American banks, but the work of the bank will go on.”

The U.S. Treasury Department on Jan. 23 took steps to cut off Bank Tejarat from the international financial system for providing financial services to Iran’s lenders and companies under international sanctions for involvement in the country’s nuclear and missile proliferation. The move “will deepen Iran’s financial isolation Watches Replica,” Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David S. Cohen said in a statement.

European Union foreign ministers on Jan. 23 also agreed to freeze the assets of Bank Tejarat’s European branch in Paris.

Belarus, which U.S. President George W. Bush described as “the last dictatorship in Europe” in 2005, yesterday called the sanctions against Iran “counterproductive.”

Economic Sanctions

“Methods of economic pressure and coercion are totally unacceptable,” the foreign ministry said in a statement yesterday. “The economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran have nothing to do with nuclear non-proliferation, and will only cause harm to the country’s economy and ordinary people.”

Trade Capital Bank is Belarus’s 12th-largest lender with about 1.9 trillion Belarusian rubles ($224 million) in assets as of Oct. 1, according to the central bank’s records. The lender had the third-biggest profit growth of Belarus’s banks last year, the central bank data shows, after net income rose eightfold to 21.6 billion rubles in the third quarter from 2.6 billion rubles a year earlier. The bank has branches in Tehran and Kiev as well as Minsk, according to its website.

Lagarde Signals to IMF Staff More Power for Emergi

By Timothy R. Homan and Sandrine Rastello

July 1 (Bloomberg) — Christine Lagarde signaled that as the new head of the International Monetary Fund she will follow through on a promise to increase the stature of emerging-market nations at the global lender.

Lagarde, speaking to IMF staff in a video message, distanced herself from her previous role as French finance minister and indicated she would advance efforts to give more voting power to countries such as China and Brazil, according to a transcript obtained by Bloomberg News yesterday. Her five-year term begins on July 5.

“The transformations that have taken place in relation to governance for instance, must be pursued, must be continued, so that the fund does belong to its 187 members,” Lagarde, 55, said. “I am not the director of a particular group of countries. I am the director of the entire institution.”

In the course of an election-style campaign that took her to Brazil, China and the Middle East, Lagarde promised to boost the clout of developing nations at the IMF. In doing so she garnered endorsements from emerging economies as well as European Union countries and the U.S.

Lagarde was selected over Agustin Carstens, Mexico’s central bank governor. Emerging markets failed to rally around a candidate from among their ranks, after calling for an end to Europe’s six-decade lock on the position.

Candidate Lagarde

As a candidate, Lagarde also said she would push for quick implementation of a 2010 agreement that makes China the third- strongest voice in the organization and gives more say to nations such as South Korea. The 2010 agreement also weakens the influence of advanced European economies, which pledged to reduce the number of seats they hold on the IMF’s 24-person executive board.

“I am very concerned that we can enrich the institution as much as we can by using diversity as an asset,” Lagarde said, according to the transcript of the video message. “Gender Watches Replica, geography, academic background, culture — all that diversity should actually be mixed so well that it produces this unbelievable intellectual talent that you together can produce.”

Women accounted for 45.5 percent of the IMF’s staff and 21.5 percent of its managerial jobs at the end of 2010, according to the organization’s annual diversity report Watches Replica, which also called the number of employees from emerging-market countries “unacceptably small.”

Lagarde is the first woman to head the IMF. She replaces Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who resigned after his arrest last month on charges that include attempted rape. He has pleaded not guilty.

“I know that recent events have not been particularly pleasant for any of you nor for the institution as a whole,” Lagarde said to IMF staff, without mentioning Strauss-Kahn by name.
